Double-hungs open without swinging outward, so they work beside walkways, above porches, and anywhere a crank-out sash would be in the way. Two moving sashes give you choices a single-sash window can't. Lower the top sash to vent warm air up high while keeping the opening out of reach of kids and pets. Raise the bottom for a direct breeze. Open both a few inches and the room circulates on its own, fresh air in below, stale air out above. Every screen stays in place the whole time.
